2024-2025 CBA season has kicked off with all 20 teams in action. With the new rule allowing four quarters and seven foreign players, the pace of the game has significantly increased, making it more entertaining. The foreign players, given more playing time and opportunities, have once again stolen the spotlight from the local players, signaling a return to the "era of foreign players."

The dominance of foreign players in scoring has been evident in the first round of the CBA league. Out of the top 10 scorers, only Hu Jinqiu, with his measly 37 points, is a local player. The rest are all foreign imports. Even in the top 20, there are only four local players. The same trend can be seen in the rebound, assist, and steals categories, where foreign players are leading the way.

The statistical bias towards foreign players was expected with the loosening of the foreign player policy. After all, most foreign players have superior skills compared to the local players. Coaches and players prefer to let the foreign players handle the ball on the offensive end. In the shooting attempts ranking, all of the top 10 players are foreign players, representing different teams. Only three local players made the top 20.

The impact of the policy change is most evident in the scoring distribution. In the first round of the regular season, out of the total 2,128 points scored by the 20 teams, 48.6% (1,034 points) were contributed by foreign players, while the local players accounted for only 51.4% (1,094 points). In the previous season, local players scored 66.3% (68,362 points) of the total points, while foreign players scored 33.7% (34,672 points). This shows the significant impact of the foreign player policy change on the new season of the CBA league.

Although the CBA league has given more playing time to foreign players, it is still the small foreign players who have the most influence on the game's outcome. The performance of the big foreign players is relatively less significant. In the first game of the season, last season's Finals MVP, Fergusson of Liaoning, scored 39 points, with additional contributions in rebounds, assists, and steals. It was rare to see all 31 points scored by Liaoning in the first quarter coming from foreign players, a testament to their dominance.

In the case of Shanghai, which only had two small foreign players in the first round, the outcome of the game was heavily influenced by the performance of their small foreign player, Waters. Despite an excellent performance with 16 points and 13 assists in the first three quarters, Waters suffered from a calf cramp in the third quarter, resulting in zero points in the fourth quarter and overtime. This exposed the vulnerability of Shanghai's lack of a third foreign player. On the other hand, Beijing's small foreign player, Jermaine, scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including the game-winning three-pointer, helping the team turn the tide.

Statistically, the small foreign players are responsible for scoring and assisting, while the big foreign players focus on rebounding and defense. However, in crucial moments, especially in the fourth quarter, most teams prefer to rely on their reliable and outstanding small foreign players. Only a few teams, like Tianjin and Ningbo, choose to keep their big foreign players on the court. Tianjin's David James, for example, had an impressive performance with 33 points, 27 rebounds, and 6 assists, helping the team secure a victory.

The policy change regarding foreign players has narrowed the gap between teams and added more unpredictability to the games. In the first round, teams like Beijing, Shanxi, and Tongxi defeated Shanghai, Guangdong, and Shenzhen, respectively, despite being lower-ranked in the previous season. The performance of foreign players played a significant role in deciding the outcomes of these games.
